The 5 Characteristics of Emotional Intelligence

Self-Awareness

Self-awareness is being aware of your emotions, thoughts and behavior and knowing how your emotions, thoughts and behavior can affect the people around you.

Social Awareness

Social awareness is having social skills that allow you to understand how another person is feeling, empathize with them, and take a different perspective on a situation. It's also managing change and resolving conflicts diplomatically.

Self-regulation

Self-regulation is the ability to understand and manage your behavior and your reactions to strong emotions (positive or negative) and responding appropriately to your environment. It is the ability to remain calm, cope, and adapt. People with this skill don't make rushed or emotional decisions, or compromise their values. Self-regulation is about staying in control.

Empathy

Empathy is the ability to understand and feel what another person is experiencing from within their frame of reference. It is the capacity to put yourself in someone else's shoes, sense their emotions, and imagine what they might be thinking or feeling.

Motivation

Self-motivation includes your personal drive to improve and achieve, commitment to your goals, initiative, or readiness to act on opportunities with optimism. It is consistently working toward your goals and having high standards for the quality of your efforts.
